The 2011-12 season was one of the most complicated in the club's recent history. Relegation did not mark the end of Sporting de Gijón's identity and spirit. During those years in the First Division, Sporting stood out for its constant fight and its ability to compete against more powerful teams. The club prepared for a new stage in the Second Division, with the hope of returning to the elite and recovering the position it had historically occupied in Spanish football.
